Moggio Udinese and its surroundings

Moggio Udinese lies in Canale del Ferro valley, where the river Fella runs through.

The valley then opens up in a nice green area, leaving on the left side the river Aupa valley. This town consumes a big portion of the North-eastern region of the Alps (sq.Km 143,84), and is one of the most wide-ranging communities of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia as it borders with 9 Italian Communities and with Austria in the North.

In town there are a few interesting historical and architectural sites such as San Gallo Abbey,Borgo Linussio and the remains of the Holy Spirit Church; but the most astonishing of all is the beauty of its landscapes. Due to a peculiar position, extension and morfology it represents a region of transition among different alpine settings with specific naturalistic and faunal characteristics. As a matter of fact the whole area includes the Julian Pre-Alps (in the South), Tolmezzo Alps (in the centre) and Carnic Alps (in the North).

In the valley, which varies from 345 mt (Moggio Basso) to 380 mt above sea level (Moggio Alto) the town was completely rebuilt and restored after the 1976 earthquake had destroyed it.In the summer the tourist can enjoy every kind of walks, guided hiking tours, trekking e picnics in those valleys of rare beauty and untouched natureframed by solemn mountain tops.

Alba Valley and Aupa Valley is a “must” for tourists offer to discoverthisbeauty: clear crystal waters of the homonymous rivers flow along themain road, well cultivated fields embroidered with flowers that cover all slopes and hills as well as luxuriant trees from the steep sides of the valleys to the rocky overhanging walls of the Grauzaria mount.

Shy villages come out from the intense green and sunny plains such as Pradis, Chiaranda, Grauzaria, Dordolla e Bevorchians. Lonely shepherd’s houses are silently scattered here among the flourishing conifer woods.Dordolla is one the most characteristic suburbs whose uphill cobbled-paved narrow streets or else made of porphyry would remind one of the Venetian “calle”. Thesestreets manage to seep into the irregular houses and their balconies, terraces, vaults made of stones or wood. The main church stands alone above the valley.

Hiking trails emerge from the suburb and lead to saddle points and old shepherd’s huts, hiddenpastures and Second World War fortification remains. This is a precious natural heritage!

The path to the Grauzaria Refuge winds along a breathtaking panoramic view and the whole area is populated by a wide variety of plants: rhododendron, magnificent beech-wood forests, the smell of mountain pines, and formations of rocks that resemble Gothic cathedrals.

Each of the lateral valleys of Aupa Valley is an invitation to discover more fascinating natural microsystems.

Also the architectural heritage that Moggio Udinese has to offer cannot be overlooked.
